Laminectomy
The lamina is a protective part of the vertebrae that covers nerves and nerve endings. Sometimes, laminae can be pressured by numerous causes, including herniated discs, spinal stenosis, boney tumors, and more. This typically results in severe pain in the legs and hips due to nerve compression. A lumbar laminectomy is a surgical procedure performed to treat the leg pain related to this compression or damage. Stenosis is more likely to occur with aging. The result of stenosis is thickening and hardening of the ligaments in the spine. This results in bulging discs, inflammation of bones and joints, and the formation of bone spurs.
A laminectomy is intended to relieve pressure on the spinal cord by widening the spinal canal, releasing pressure on the nerves in the spine. This is done by removing or trimming the lamina to create more space for the nerves. This is basically freeing up room for the nerves, and relieving any compression causing the pain. Spinal fusion can sometimes be a factor in this surgery, but a surgeon may perform a laminectomy without having to fuse any bones or remove part of a disc. Various artificial devices, such as screws, plates, and rods, may be used to add stability to the spinal column, and ensure that disc slips and nerve compression remain a nonfactor.
