Failed Back Surgery Syndrome
Failed back surgery syndrome, often referred to as failed back syndrome, can cause chronic back or neck pain. That pain can also spread to the extremities. Causes of this symptom include:
- Recurrent disc herniation
- Compressed nerves
- Compressed spinal cord
- Smoking
- Anxiety
- Depression
Failed back syndrome can be treated both non-surgically and surgically. Non-surgical treatment may include:
- Medicine
- Injections
- Physical therapy
Surgical treatments can be performed if the pain generator is identified. This can include:
- Fusion
- Laminectomy
- Decompression procedures
If surgery is not viable, then spinal cord stimulator may be an option.
